Sample project: Low-cost School Rainwater Harvesting and Water Awareness Initiative

We aim to set up a small, low-cost rainwater harvesting demonstration unit in a school campus and combine it with student-led water awareness activities. Over a 3-month period, the project will install a basic rooftop collection and storage system for non-potable use, while engaging students in water tracking, conservation learning, and simple maintenance. The total estimated budget is ₹38,000. The project is designed as a small but visible pilot that can later be scaled with more support.

What problem are you addressing?

Our school and nearby community experience periodic water stress, especially in hotter months when supply becomes irregular. At the same time, rainwater from existing rooftops is not being captured or used. Students also have very limited opportunities to participate in practical sustainability projects that solve a real local problem. This project addresses both the water waste issue and the need for hands-on environmental learning through a simple, affordable intervention.

What do you want to do first?

We propose to install a basic rainwater harvesting system connected to a small section of rooftop area, with simple gutters, piping, a first-flush arrangement, a filter layer, and one storage drum/tank for non-potable uses such as gardening and campus cleaning. The implementation period will be 3 months. Month 1 will focus on site assessment, planning, and material procurement. Month 2 will focus on installation. Month 3 will focus on student workshops, basic monitoring, and project documentation. The expected outputs are one working demonstration rainwater harvesting unit, at least 3 student awareness sessions, direct engagement of around 50 students, and basic monitoring of water collected and used. The project will document progress through photos, short updates, and a simple end-of-project note that can be shared with supporters.

What support is needed right now?

We are looking for small-scale financial support, simple technical guidance, and light mentorship. The main request is approximately ₹38,000 for materials, installation, training, and documentation. We would also value advice on low-cost system design, safe use of collected water, and simple reporting. For granting purposes, we can share a short budget note, milestone plan, and photo-based progress updates during implementation. The estimated total budget is ₹38,000, with a simple breakdown as follows: • ₹12,000 for gutters, pipes, fittings, and connectors • ₹8,000 for a storage drum/tank • ₹5,000 for filtration and first-flush components • ₹5,000 for local installation support and labor • ₹3,000 for student workshops and awareness materials • ₹2,000 for monitoring tools and log sheets • ₹3,000 for documentation and contingency

Team or individual

The project is being led by a student team of 5 members with guidance from 1 teacher coordinator and help from a local technician for installation. Student volunteers will support awareness sessions, monitoring, and documentation. The school administration will help with permissions and long-term maintenance.
